Comments If you like wreck diving, go to Truk on the Odyssey, and then you'll love wreck diving! The boat, crew, and diving are fantastic!!! Did 22 dives on variety of wrecks (kiyosumi, yamagiri, fumitzuki, shinkoku, i-169, unkai, rio de janeiro, hoki, momokawa, fujikawa, nippo, heian, san francisco, and kensho). Divers who didn't do san francisco did Betty bomber.

Very safety conscious briefings and guides can lead you on interesting/challenging penetrations of most wrecks. Treat you as an adult with regard to deco and depth; absolutely no pressure to dive below 130; it's up to you. They brief San Francisco day prior and allow you to make your own decision subject to their final approval. If you decide to dive SF, you skip the night dive day prior and the 2nd dive of the next day. They lead groups of four to forward part of ship. An 80 cu ft tank is placed on the deck between the two forward holds and also at 30 and 20 ft on the mooring ball. There is also an 80 as always at the 15 ft bar at the stern of the Odyssey.

This was our fourth live-aboard (Sky Dancer, Nautilus Explorer and Swell) and while the other boats were excellent, the accommodations on the Odyssey are outstanding! Very spacious all over. Great food and open bar with quality brands (Bombay Sapphire, Australian wine/beer, Johnny Walker Red, for example).

Water temps were almost always 86 degrees. Since the wrecks are inside a vast lagoon, visibility can be lower than you might expect; but since the focus is on the wrecks, this wasn't a big issue.

Getting to/from Truk: Be sure to arrive at least a full day early, preferably two. Also, when you leave allow for some flexibility. United is the only game in town and we had flights cancel for one day both going and returning. Going from Hawaii, the flight was cancelled at 9:30 pm, the night before a 5:25 am takeoff. Leaving Truk: the plane arrived from Guam, but then developed a maintenance problem after landing at Truk. After several hours, Truk boarding passengers were sent back to lodging and the plane flew back to Guam for repairs. In both cases, the flights were rescheduled and ran on-time the next day. Make sure you enable email flight notifications! Plan to stay at the Blue Lagoon Resort in Truk. While the other hotels might be OK; the Blue Lagoon has spacious, well-tended grounds, good service/food, and decent rooms. It is also where you board the Odyssey. If you get there early, you can also dive or snorkel. The bus ride from the airport to the Blue Lagoon is an odyssey unto itself; 30 mins to go about 6 miles over muddy, water-flooded, pothole-infested dirt and gravel roads. We got to do three round trips and several of us used motion sickness medication to get ready for the chuuk-hole induced drops and wobbles. The island of Weno (where the airport is located) is extremely third-world and is not a place to stroll around. Stay at your hotel!

Only local mobile phones work on the boat and Weno. The Blue Lagoon has free wi-fi, but it is very slow, and no signal on the Odyssey. The Odyssey has all the wreck books and creature books in good numbers, so you don't have to pack your own. They also produce a very well done (Todd) trip DVD for $60 and have an on-board shop with t-shirts, maps, DVDs, etc., for sale.

Many thanks to Nelson, Todd, and the entire crew, especially the dive guides - Sam, Ken, and Jesse (ask him to take you down the smokestack of the Shinkoku Maru to the engine room - a WOW dive). Also, our party of six had great fun with the other eight divers from the Motley Crew group of Western Australia.

We will definitely go back for diving on the Truk Odyssey.
