Comments This my 3rd trip to Truk Lagoon, 2nd onboard Odyssey. If you enjoy wreck diving, then this is the adventure to take ... I suggest sooner rather than later as the wrecks seem to be deteriorating more rapidly. The boat is also starting to show its age; no major problems, but a little rusty around the edges, may a screw missing/loose here and there. Still safe. I was told the the boat was going into the yard for maintenance/repair/refurbishment in a few weeks; so should be good to go.

I guess I should also own up that the US owner [one of?] was onboard for the trip. I didn't know, boat was empty when I booked.

I first dove this lagoon ~22 years ago shore based, then about 9 years ago onboard Odyssey. It is a given that the wrecks will eventually fall apart, but the process seems to be speeding up. If you decide on Chuuk/Truk Lagoon, the I highly recommend Odyssey. Boat moors above the wreck, fall off the back, swim around, do some exploring, and ride the elevator [yes, they have an elevator to get you out of the water] up to the boat. I highly recommend following the divemasters/guides. 2 dives on most wrecks, so my first dive was around the outside, light penetration while most of the others headed on in. I went in on the second dive, usually with a smaller group. The dive masters know these wrecks very well and are skilled at what they do.

Growth on most of the ships has aged nicely. It is getting harder to identify the underlying structure. Visibility was a little on the short side; far enough to see what's going on and much over 3-5 meters inside is wasted anyway.

From my perspective, the accommodations/hotel services/food are industry standard for a mid-upper level live aboard. No butlers, but clean, comfortable and responsive. What I expected.

I am an engineer by trade. I took an unaccompanied tour of the engineering/support spaces early on. I was comfortable that the boat could take of me for the week. Like I stated earlier, a little rust, oil, dirt but safe. The air system was clean and appears to be well maintained. Took care of us nicely. I think Odyssey can meet he needs of pretty much any diving style; rebreather, mixed gas, etc. Contact them for details.

I wish to thank Odyssey and the SeaSave [[SeaSave.org link]] organization. Odyssey donated a trip to SeaSave; they auctioned it; I bid $1,500; I was the only bidder. Also paid the same for a week in Walindi, PNG. I was able to setup the trip for a little less that $2,900 including transportation from HNL.

Given the price I paid, this trip was fantastic. If spending a week averaging 2 wrecks/4-5 dives a day, then I strongly recommend Truk Lagoon and Truk Odyssey. Not much for coral reefs, pelagics or drifts. But, at wrecks, Truk [Odyssey & Lagoon] excels.

Aloha,

Tim

UW Photo Comments I was diving a Sony HC-9 [yes, old, but solid] in a L&M Bluefin case with L&M 2000X LED lights. Nice camera table, charging shelf in saloon. Reasonable [all I needed] support.
