Comments We got what we expected. Manta and more Mantas. We were there in mating season and saw 30 or so mantas an most dives in Miil channel. The channel had limited vis - perhaps as low as 30 ft at times but there was nothing as exciting as seeing those huge mantas coming out of the gloom to pass within a couple feet of you. Photography for us was pretty close to monochrome because photos without flash were best. The mantas were so close that we didn't need additional light to see every detail on their bodies. Watching how they flapped their wings and controlled themselves with small wingtip and front fin subtleties was just terrific. I could have stayed there for hours at a time. As it was most dives ended after about 45 min. Our depth was 60-70 ft most of the time. Often I lay on the bottom supported only by my elbows holding the camera. As well as groups of mantas, I took some photos so close I could only see a small portion of their bodies.

Manta Ray Bay is a terrific hotel and dive operation. Their guides really know the mantas and are the most experienced divers on the island. I think we lucked out choosing this hotel.

The Mnuw, an old cargo boat from Indonesia was moored to shore and served as their restaurant and bar. The food was fine but after a while became too familiar. We found several restaurants near the hotel that had terrific manus and food also.

Some divers also dove outside the reef and their reports of clear water and lots of fish life and more mantas sounded great. Our choice was to stay in the Miil channel akd keep watching mantas swim past us.

Next time I come I'll spend more time in Yap and less on the other islands.
