Comments We spent 10 nights at Kosrae Nautilus Resort for the diving. Arrived on a Saturday afternoon and no diving is available on Sunday's due to the island's religion. We were the only divers the whole week so the dive boat was all ours until the last day when a few snorkelers and fishing guests came along. After the first dives we knew we were in for a week of pristine hard corals that are huge mountains. Just piles and piles on top of each other of all shapes and species of coral, lots of anenome, colorful small fish, blooming hard coral everywhere you looked that swayed in the gentle current. Not a lot of big fish but we saw large schools of Barracuda a couple times and other large schools occasionally, a huge grouper who actually let us get pretty close. Small nudibranchs around, colorful clams, a couple of turtles, the usual tangs and mid sized fish local to Micronesia and a few eagle Rays. The corals were definitely the main attraction. Just seeing all that healthy hard coral blooming and swaying in the current was such a gift to the senses. The dive boats were adequate but need of a good cleaning. The dive docks need repairs so you had to watch for holes/broken boards as you walked to the boat. This is not a luxury dive setup but we enjoyed the friendly owner and dive guide who showed enthusiasm for the diving on every dive.
The Nautilus Resort was very clean and the maids were wonderful. The cook and waitstaff were also wonderful and friendly. We met many local people who were friendly and enjoyed talking about their life in Kosrae. One man took us to his farm to show us his crops. Another man brought us a fresh lobster for dinner. A lady visiting from Guam was staying at the resort and brought us fresh bananas every day to try all the different varieties. The local men come for coffee each morning to sit outdoors and chat. All people we met were very nice.
It was very hot during April, about 97F during the day and 80ish at night. Water temps about 86F. It rained almost everyday with sunshine in between. The island is green and tropical. The beaches are not good for swimming, sea grass along the shore and the reef is way out there. There is a swimming hole at high tide that is at a cement dock near the resort. Snorkelled The Blue Hole at high tide and it was a long snorkel and not very pretty.
Overall we enjoyed this trip, but it probably won't be one of those "must return to" destinations.
