Comments Beyond the Reef is a tiny operation. One boat--four divers max. We were with two snorkelers one day, alone for our other dives. Morgan (dive guide) and John Paul consulted with us each day on dive locations. Dive trips left in accordance with the tides and so the time varied each day. We encountered one couple diving with the big dive operation on the island who had been on 10 manta dives and had seen two mantas. We went on two, saw mantas, 2-5, each time. (I later learned that mantas appear at the cleaning station when the tide is going out. The couple had dived the same days we had, but earlier in the day.) There was an initial tendency to take us to see large pelagics but when we indicated we were more interested in seeing reef fish, dive sites were shifted to accommodate us. We pretty much dived as we pleased with Morgan hanging out and occassionally pointing out sharks, turtles or nudibranches. Hot chocolate and snacks were available for the dive interval.

The Pathways Hotel is small and lovely. Ten (I think) cottages on a hill on the road into Colonia. Best food on the island is at Trader's Ridge. Bar food available at Manta Bay Hotel (which caters to dive groups).

It rained several days, but we found calm, clear places to dive. We were well out of the rainy season. One hotel owner said the weather we were experiencing should have been over in November.

The dive trip included 10 days in Palau and 7 in Yap. I wish we had spent more time on Yap and less on Palau, though if big critters are your thing, then Palau is better.
