Time with our kids and our grandkids is priceless. It was 20 years ago when mother-of-two Margo Peyton got together with Carolyn Pascal, then the publisher of Skin Diver magazine, and came up with the idea of Kids' Sea Camp. Both women missed their kids while away on diving trips.
The first Kids' Sea Camp family dive adventure week took place in Curacao with Ocean Encounters and the Curacao Sea Aquarium in 2000, with just seven families participating.
Now Kids' Sea Camp has over 300 families a year that travel to 13-plus countries with 20 weeks each year thanks to PADI, the dive media, and Scubapro -- as well as all the resorts and dive operators that have welcomed them.
There will be 20 Kids' Sea Camp events this year. There are new destinations and liveaboards, as well as PADI Pro courses for all those kids turning 18 and older who want to become divemasters or even dive instructors. New "Empty Nester" dive trips have been created for those parents who have grown-up kids but who still want to travel with someone they know and trust. It's a good way for grandparents to get their grandkids into diving and ocean ecology, while being able to escape their noise and have a margarita or two.
