Maximize your time below the surface by booking a resort that allows you to sleep with the fishes. The Conrad Rangali Island Resort in south Ari Atoll of the Maldives has debuted a two-level villa called the Muraka (coral in the local Dhivehi language) with an entire floor below the Indian Ocean. The resort opened its Ithaa Undersea Restaurant 13 years previously. www.conradmaldives.com
Prefer Africa? The Manta Resort, on Pemba Island off Tanzania's coast, has an underwater bedroom in its floating villa anchored to the ocean floor. We wonder if the motion of the ocean will rock you to sleep or if you stay up all night rather than sleep with the fishes. www.themantaresort.com
At least you get views of the ocean, but not to be outdone, the Chinese have the InterContinental Shimao Wonderland, southwest of Shanghai, built inside the abandoned Songjiang quarry with two floors located underwater, giving views of the hotel's aquarium. The hotel's seafood restaurant gives underwater views, too, even if you don't see food in the aquarium. www.ihg.com
You'd expect the Middle East to come up with something, and the two underwater suites at the Atlantis on Palm Island in Dubai look into the resort's aquarium, where 65,000 marine animals live among the mock ruins of the lost city of Atlantis. A view of the waters of the nearby Arabian Gulf would be a little stark by comparison. www.atlantisthepalm.com
Resorts World, Sentosa in Singapore has 11 ocean suites, which also look into the resort's aquarium stocked with around 40,000 captive fish. www.rwsentosa.com
You may not approve of aquariums, but soon you'll also be able to book a room in a fully submerged luxury hotel such as the Poseidon Undersea Resort in Fiji or the Hydropolis in Dubai, with true ocean views. They're still on the drawing board.
