Comments Having dove St. Croix off a Nekton liveaboard in 2008, I was interested to see what damage the Sept., 2018 hurricane had done to the Island of St. Croix as well as the coral reefs and fish. Having made my reservations before the hurricane, I spent many months worrying about whether St. Croix would be back in business by March, 2018. Happily, the Island now has power and the Arawak Inn( Bed and Breakfast) was up and running. Jennifer( the owner) cooks a tasty breakfast to order and did a wonderful job giving us directions since many of the route signs and traffic lights have not been replaced. However, the roads are open and very little damage remains through the country side. Cane Bay Divers keeps their dive boat very near the Arawak Inn( approx. 1/2 mi.) and if you don't have transportation they will pick you up in the morning. Demeritt and Mike provided excellent guidance as Captain and dive guide in the water and chose dive sites that had the best visibility and least damage from the hurricane.
Reef and nurse sharks were seen on multiple dives; along with turtles, southern sting rays, spotted and green moray eels, filefish, trunkfish, porcupine fish, cowfish, trumpetfish, spotted drumfish, and many others. The hurricane did not seem to bother the quantity or quality of fish but there was obvious damage to the hard and soft coral. Probably the most noticeable coral damage I saw when comparing 2008 with 2018 was at the Frederiksted Pier. It seems the Sept. hurricane pretty much cleared the soft corals off the pier pillars. There still are plenty of fish under the Pier, but the beautiful corals on the columns have been badly damaged. I am sure in the next couple of years they will come back, but at the present they are not the same as previously. In conclusion, St. Croix is open for business. The diving is good, the food is excellent( try Rowdy Joe's, Flyers in the Cane Bay Marina and the pizza along the waterfront in Christiansted is to die for) and the people are very friendly and helpful.

UW Photo Comments Cane Bay Dive crew very helpful in assisting divers with cameras. A larger rinse bucket for cameras would be helpful. Camera table in middle of dive boat is also more than adequate.
Dive boat also has a marine head that works.
