Comments Tortola is a beautiful, green and hilly island. Long Bay is very nicely situated on a beautiful white sandy beach. Just off the beach is much dead coral which makes it difficult in some places to enter and swim, though the are spots where it's nice and sandy and I enjoyed body surfing in the surf.
Blue Water Divers(BWD) ( located at Nanny Cay ) has several over- used and not kept up boats. The dive staff was extremely helpful and somewhat apologetic. They knew where the critters lived and gave us a good amount of bottom time. I guess this was only fair since at least an hour and a half was spent picking up bare boaters at half a dozen anchorages. They had two to three boats and every one stopped to pick up a diver or two. They had fresh water and cheap beer.
I had only one opportunity to dive with Dan Betta. He was definetly a fish finder. On one dive he pointed out 5 different Hamlets, 4 types of butterfly fish, 7 different parrotfish, flounders and an octopus. The other dive masters were all sharp. On two of the six diving days I was alone with the divemaster. We dove my computer and had a blast.
The wreck of the Rhone was to die for. I took a hundred pictures and just had a great two dives.
BWD would not buoy if there was an surge or current. This might have been a case of diving to the least capable, but very extreme.
I probably would try another operator next visit to the BVI.
