Comments While you probably wouldn't travel here strictly for the diving, it still is fun and relatively inexpensive. The dive shop is part of the massive Miramar hotel, which like its neighbors, is a first-class resort fit for royalty.
We did two dives, the first around Dibba Rock, a huge boulder rising from the sea, and a very short trip from the dive shop.
This is in the Gulf of Oman, part of the Indian Ocean, and has plenty of sea life, mostly medium-size fish and many, many eels, which generally were the stars of the show. A few turtles and very nice pipefish also made an appearance, and some people--not us--saw a couple of sharks. Close to shore and shallow--42 feet max--meant particulate matter in the water that limited photograpy and at times made viz so so. However, you just swim around this big rock, so navigation is easy.
The second site, the Car Cemetery, is named for the many vehicles laid out there quite awhile ago. It's in about 50 feet of water. The vehicles are very disintegrated and pretty much unrecognizable. We did a lot of wasted swimming trying to find them, but they are there, and each is loaded with nudibranches and eels. At this time of year (February) in a wetsuit by the end of the dive we were a bit cold.
The only negative is that the boat, kind of a six pack, ties off about 35 feet from shore. Walking, then swimming, out to it was fine, but coming back they require you to bring your empty tank, and then hike through the sand to the shop. However, crew members did come to the rescue for some of us when we slogged through the beach.
Arranging these dives from the States was easy, and the shop personnel and crew very friendly and helpful.
We drove over from Dubai and had a great time visiting historical sites and enjoying the rugged land of desert and mountains.
