Comments Subtropic runs several different dive trips out of its shop on Truman Avenue in Key West, just about 1/2 mile or so from Duval Street. I like the morning 2-tank 2-wreck dive. The first, deepest, wreck is the Cayman Salvage Master which lies at 97 feet to the sand. It's an old cable layer and a pretty easy wreck to navigate. Heavy currents, though not too frequent, can make it less than perfect. Viz is usually OK - sometimes great and sometimes not so much. Green morays are fairly commonThere is a huge jewfish that loves to hang off the side of the ship and watch you as you try to spot him.

Next dive is Joe's tug which, though it's a wreck of sorts, is really a reef dive with some wrecked boat debris! The reef surrounding the wreck is really not bad to explore. Losters, green and spotted morays and the occasional eagle ray. Swim around the wreck and explore the reef but just keep the wreck in sight.

Subtropic is a very friendly group of people. Good captains, good DM's and crew people. Friendly and fun. Two boats - one small for 6 to 8 divers and one larger for up to 18, but I've never seen more than 10 or 12. Its location, right on the main drag into town, its friendly staff and its two-tank two-wreck itenerary make it my operator of choice in Key West.
