Comments Actually, this report is about three operations. Force-E set me up to dive with South Florida Divers and Parrot Island Divers. I rented my BC and regulator from them, and they arranged for my tanks to be on the boat. The equipment was in excellent condition. South Florida Divers was a cattle boat with a mixture of about 18 snorkelers, 6 divers getting their certification (who did have their own DM) and 5 certified divers. In Florida, you do not have a dive master go down with you; you have to hook up all your own gear, which if you are renting you get from a shop in town and drag it to the boat; and there are no nice snacks or fruit juice waiting when you come up from a dive. The dives are mediocre at best and if you ask someone on the boat or in the store about something you saw -- they don't know what it is. In the shop you're told you can look it up in a book. In all fairness the DM on the South Florida boat did her best to keep everyone happy.
My experience with Parrot Island Divers was a great improvement, since there were only 10 of us on the boat, although you still were expected to hook up your own gear, and there were at least some cold drinks when you came up. Kim, the DM and Jerry, the captain were very helpful and accommodating.
I've done nearly a 100 dives over the last 20 years which isn't a lot and I guess I'm spoiled from diving in the Caribbean and Hawaii. As I was told by someone in the Scuba shop, "Florida is not considered a dive destination, and that's the way we do things here." Well, to be sure, I will never consider it a dive destination again!
