Comments Captain Alec Blalock of Deep South Rivers (803/428-3884) runs a 28 foot pontoon boat on the Cooper River north of Charleston, South Carolina. The diving is primarily for vertebrate fossils and artifacts. The boat is an excellent dive platform and Alec and his divemaster Ronnie really know the river and where to go to look for fossils (especially shark teeth). The teeth come in all sizes from less than an inch in length fo greater than 6 inches for the Megalodon teeth.
Dive conditions on the river are not for the beginner, sometimes strong currents, low visibility and zero light at greater than 20 foot depth. However if you have experience and are interested in fossils this is the place to go. I have dove there on over a dozen trips and have always had a good time. I generally take friends with me and all have enjoyed it and most have made at least one return trip.
