OVERALL DIVING FOR BEGINNERS - 4

MONEY'S WORTH ON THE DIVE BOAT - 4
OVERALL DIVE BOAT EXPERIENCE - 4-5

Our group was composed of a mix of beginners, intermediates and very experienced divers and made 6 dives (4 shore, 2 boat) over 3 days. The shore dives were all at Casino Point and included 1 night dive.

Shore dive entry/exit is extremely easy using large concrete stairs that go into the water. The dive park is from 20-90 feet deep. Maximum depth is < 200 feet from the shore so it is a very easy swim. There are several small wrecks, dense kelp forests of various types of kelp and plentiful small fish. Tanks and weights are available at the dive site. We saw an octopus or two and 1 harbor seal. Fish at Casino Point are not shy, in fact some nipped at face masks and gloves which "spooked" at least one of the novice divers in our group.
Note: there are no lights at Casino Point so it is necessary to have lights to get dressed and undress for the night dive.

There are thermoclines, the ones we experienced changed water temperature by as much as 8 degrees (74-66) at about 40'. This does influence how much rubber you wear.

The main reason we went there was to see Giant Black Sea Bass, and we saw plenty on our first boat dive. These are huge fish (up to several hundred pounds) that like to hangout in the kelp forests and we found them in 35-80 feet of water off the boat dive. The boat is perfect for divers. Lots of room and the crew is very helpful. It leaves at 10 and is back by 3 (2 tank) and the crew knew exactly where to go.

The town of Avalon is very small, one can go just about anywhere on foot even with dive gear.

Overall, we all thought it was one of our best (cold water) dive vacations ever.
