Comments Vis: 90 feet first dive, 30 feet second dive. Water: 75 to 78 F, 4’ seas. We went on one two-tank trip with Blue Water Divers. $75 for a non-guided 2-tank trip. Although the majority of our dives were with Key Dives in Islamorada, we booked two trips with Blue Water Divers so that we could dive the Speigel Grove and the Duane, both of which are more easily accessible by dive operators in Key Largo. When I booked I asked for nitrox for the first dives of the day but didn’t get it.-not sure where things broke down but I didn’t mention it to them when I noticed it wasn’t on board. Due to cancellations and rough seas we ended up on just one trip with Blue Water Divers. We had five divers on Blue Water Divers’ ~30-foot boat. Seas were forecast to be very rough that morning and Glenn, the boat captain, gave my wife and me plenty of warning about it and ample opportunity to back out of the trip. There was one divemaster with a student and another divemaster who assisted onboard but did not lead any dives. The captain was instructive and friendly but it wasn’t hard to tell that he would not have the patience for the ‘high-maintenance’ diver all of us have seen out on the water once in a while. The first dive was on the Duane. Seas were rough and the current fairly strong. The captain tied into the mooring line aft-end first (waves were coming in to us at close to 90 degrees from the current direction). From there it was an easy giant stride in and an easy grab on to the line. The Duane was immediately visible from the surface. It was an absolutely fabulous dive. We had great visibility, ~90 ft, saw abundant marine life, and there was a thick coating of coral all over the upright and intact wreck. I rate it as one of my best wreck dive experiences. Upon returning to the boat, we found it turned around per normal boat dive-boat operations and everyone boarded without incident. The second dive was at Molasses Reef at Winch Hole. The divemaster briefing was good and included detailed navigation tips that helped us easily find the Winch. A camera and mask bucket was provided. No head. No diveshop.-just meet at the boat. The captain smoked. One of the divemasters smoked.
