Comments Having been grounded for 2 years due to Covid, we decided to splurge this year and do a more-pricey-than-usual Club Med trip to Turks and Caicos. We’re 2 women in our early 70s, no longer agile, so opted for Turks and Caicos as it is billed as the calmest water in the Caribbean and a rough surface would require a fork lift to get us back onto the boat.

True to its promise, the beach and shore are gorgeous with calm, bright turquoise water and white sand as far as the eye can see. But that’s not where you dive, is it? We were surprised to learn that on the outside of the reef, waves were 4-6 feet all week.

We’d prepaid for 12 dives between the 2 of us and decided each day to wait until the next day to tackle the elements. Eventually we ran out of time and just decided to go for it. Pre-loaded with Gravol, Pepto- Bismol and Imodium we ventured onto the large catamaran which would hold up to 50 people. Yes, it was a cattle boat, but highly organized and efficient! Divers were divided into rows of 6 per dive master or instructor depending on their abilities. Pre-dive talks were held separately in the small groups. With 2 tanks per person set-up of equipment was crowded and awkward. Each diver was responsible for their own gear, but on the second day when we admitted our need for help due to lack of physical strength in cramped quarters, any worker would happily do it for us.

We didn’t even notice the waves. The catamaran was very stable. We had told our dive masters that we would be unable to climb the ladder with our gear on and didn’t want to bounce around on the surface waiting for our turn, and we were given permission to surface right at the ladder and exit the water immediately. We never had to wait and I had no idea there were another 3 dozen people in the area! The dive masters peeled our gear off us the second we hit the surface then up we climbed. Neither of us uses much air and most people were already on board when we surfaced.

Buffets of breakfast and lunch were served on board. We promised ourselves that after feasting we’d skip lunch when we got back to the resort, but that never happened. The food at Club Med Turkoise is the best I’ve ever had. I became quite proficient at carrying 3 plates of appetizers to our table at once, before returning for the entrees.

The moral of the story: if you are looking for calm water, realize that August is windy season. Don’t be afraid of the “ cattle boat” experience; it is brilliantly organized. Don’t overdose on drugs that will bung you up, and plan to diet when you get home.
