Comments Salt Cay has got to be the most quiet, laid back island in the Caribbean with an airport, even more so than Little Cayman. There are about 60 locals, and 30-40 ex-pats on the 1.5 mile per side triangle. There may be more donkeys and cows than people strolling along the dirt road that goes halfway around. The other half is covered by a series of paths. There are about 10 cars & trucks, one for the 2 policemen. If you go, get ready for absolute peace and quiet. We were 3 of maybe 15 guests during Easter week.
We stayed at Villa Frangiapani(email Debbie at Salt Cay Divers for info)in absolute luxury, so much so that the house does not fit into the quaint cottages and guest houses that dot the island. The price is very reasonable for this palace(hardwood cherry floors and furniture, Corian counters, top of the line appliances) and it would hold 3 couples easily. Candy took wonderful care of us, especially entertaining our 7 year old son James.
Salt Cay Divers takes great care of their divers. Only a fe divers per trip in the 23 ft skiff, but for 6-8 divers they use a larger boat. Lots of nurse sharks and turtles populate the plunging walls a stone's throw from shore. Most rides were 3-5 minutes, except to the "Endemyon" which is about 45 minutes. Grand Turk was about 20 minutes, very much worth the effort as the walls, swim throughs and fish life reminded me of Little Cayman. A great trip, especially if you get to meet some of the people who have lived their whole lives on this salty dot.
