Comments We decided to go to Grand Turk because it's a relatively undeveloped, small, low-key, tropical destination. Only after we began investigating did we discover that it was a top-rated diving destination. Having never dived before, and since there was little else to do there, we decided to get certified.

We ended up with Oasis Divers. Dale was our instructor, and she was great. She adjusted the pace of the classroom work to our ability to absorb it, and it went by very quickly. The same was true of the confined water training, and we were out doing open water dives in no time. Her attitude was low-key and very positive.

This attitude extended to the rest of the staff at Oasis. All the divemasters we spent time with were knowledgeable, fun to dive and be on the brief boat rides with, and even inspiring. Safety was taken seriously, but not obsessively so. And they went out of their way to accomodate us, always with a smile.

Having never dived before, I can't compare the diving to anything else, but it was fantastic. We'll definitely try it now near where we live in California (although I have a feeling we've been spoiled).

The rest of the Grand Turk experience was also really fun. The tourist area is small and free of commercialism, accomodations are simple but charming (we stayed at the Salt Raker Inn), and the few small restaurants were friendly with good food. Actually, everyone
on Grand Turk was friendly and helpful, including the non-tourist-industry locals. But if you're looking for tacky souvenirs, five-star restaurants, or hopping night life, Grand Turk probably isn't for you.
