Comments My wife and I spent a week in Grand Turk and dove with Grand Turk Diving. My wife is an inexperienced diver and had not dove for several years. Smitty at Grand Turk Diving gave her one of the best refresher courses I have ever witnessed. He was thorough and patient and made sure she was comfortable with all the skills before proceeding to the next. I've seen a lot of places do refreshers as kind of a 'go through the motions' and get on to the 'real' diving, and this wasn't one of them, thankfully.

The diving was, in general, excellent. Water temps were in the upper 70s and calm with no appreciable current or surge. The reef seemed to be in great condition, although I felt the populations of fish were a little lower than I expected. We saw lots of garden eels, turtles (green and hawksbill,) sting-rays, barracuda, grouper and all of the other usual suspects in terms of fish. I was surprised to not find any moray eels lurking about, but I wasn't looking too hard. I was hoping, but not counting on, seeing sharks while there and was pleasantly surprised that there were at least 2-3 Caribbean reef sharks cruising around the edge of the wall on almost every dive. We were even able to hear humpback whales singing on several of the dives, which was a first for me.

In terms of operations, Grand Turk Diving met all expectations. They were extremely accommodating, friendly, safe and competent. I was happy that schedules were kept pretty close to plan, unlike some places where 'island time' means you don't even get on the boat until an hour or 2 after you were supposed to. We rented BCDs and Regulators, which were in very good shape and had no operational issues at all during the week. Smitty was also very helpful with giving my wife an additional 3mm wetsuit to wear under her 7mm farmer-john (she gets cold very easily). The boat was nothing fancy, but was comfortable, and in good condition including a shade structure and dry box. Smitty was very knowledgeable about the reef, sea life, and history of the area and was a very amiable host.

Grand Turk overall is a fantastic place if you are looking for a very relaxing, low-key place to vacation. Even when there are cruise ships docked, it is always possible to find a beautiful beach all to yourself. The cruisers typically don't venture out much from the Southern part of the island in any large numbers. There is not much in terms of night-life, which for us was just fine. Food is expensive, but there are several very good restaurants and the grocery store is surprisingly well stocked.
