Comments The resort sits on its own private bay, Batteaux Bay, with a view of Little Tobago and Goat Island (site of a house that once belonged to Ian Fleming). The islands are very big with birdwatchers who actually outnumbered the divers when I was there. All the other guests were European, mostly British. I was the only American there all week. The resort is on the far end of the island from the airport and is a 1 1/2 hour drive over roads which are mostly narrow and winding. (The Inn handled the transfers.) As a former British colony the local language is Creole English. US dollars are widely accepted.

The resort has been undergoing renovations for the past couple years. The rooms were all completed and they were on the last phase which was the waterfront restaurant and bar. The poolside bar was open and the meals were served temporarily in a party room. By the time you read this the new restaurant should be open. A daily breakfast including omelets and often local Creole food was included. The food actually tended to be less spicy than I expected (probably because there were so many Brits there) but Jason, the native chef always kept some of his patented hot sauce in the fridge for me. Lunch and dinner were available or it is an easy walk over the hill into Speyside where there are additional (and somewhat cheaper) restaurants. Gemma's is the most popular.

The reefs are in excellent shape. Life is abundant. I saw only one shark and one spotted eagle but I saw several turtles, numerous morays, banded shrimp, seahorses and octopi. Diving is from six pack boats with back roll entries. Currents were variable so some were treated as drift dives. The small boats were not a problem since the waves were not bad and all the sites were ten minutes or less away. They have also purchased two larger boats which had been delivered to Trinidad but had not been transferred to Tobago yet. Their plan is to start offering multitank dives on additional sites further from the resort. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Diving in Trinidad and Tobago has one odd quirk. The country is very close to Venezuela is is in the outflow of the Orinoco River. When diving, the first 15' or so is fresh water which, depending on weather conditions, may be very green. I am told July and August are the least problematic times for this. You then hit a halocline and the vis is quite good although I still had to correct for the green light.

There are other operations in Speyside but with the premier location, the upgraded facilities and the new boats, Blue Water will surely be the premier operation on the east end of Tobago
