Comments Non-diving spouse and I both enjoyed this somewhat off-the-beaten-path destination during the low season. The resort was less than 1/2 full. Apparently we hit the customary dry spell during the rainy season that was referred to as the "petite carem" (or something of such). Made for a mixed bag of visability throughout the 10 days but at least it didn't rain very much. Viz went from 80'+ to pretty bad at the end.
Most visitors were from the UK with a few others from Germany and Holland. The only other Americans we encountered were 2 couples that lived in Trinidad and were on a holiday.
Dive boats were pretty basic. Both had manually cranked, 70 HP outboard engines mounted on covered 25-30'pirouges with roll-out water entry. To exit water you could remove gear and hand it up before climbing the ladder, if necessary. Boats were functional for the 5-8 minute rides to the sites with all of our diving done just out front of the resort around Goat Island & Little Tobago. 2 dives were done off the south point of the bay where we spotted our only manta of the trip. Boats returned to the resort for the SI. Dive shop and boat personnel were pleasant and accomodating. Trips to St. Giles or other sites on other side of Tobago required 4 divers committing to dive there at least a day ahead of time. That we could never get arranged.
Coral was varied, healthy and abundant. Fish were varied and abundant also but with very few large fish. Nurse sharks were seen on about half the dives. Other marine life of note were spotted drum, scorpion fish, a sea horse, eagle rays, several turtles, a couple of octopi, tarpon, yellow goat fish, surgeons, grunts, damsels, several wrasse species, garden eels, green, spotted & speckled morays, arrow crab (I think), banded coral shrimp, numerous lobsters and more.
The hotel restaurant was a mixed bag. Breakfast was good, lunch was pretty good but we ate out for dinner with a couple of exceptions. Food service was pretty good but slow at times. We wondered if service might change during the high season. A note to previous visitors; The Fish Pot Restaurant at BWI is presently being renovated and is to reopen on October 12. It is to be air conditioned, menu redone to reflect more "creole" dishes, and renamed "The Golden Doubloon Tavern". Evening meals we took at Jenna's Tree House, The Birdwatcher Restaurant and Speyside Inn in Speyside and Sharon & Phebes over the hill in Charlotteville.
This is a quiet, laid back destination. The only night life is that created by yourself. The Friday night managers event did feature a pretty good, local steel band. BWI does have a nice, seagrape tree shaded beach.
Everything considered, we would revisit this destination.
