Comments We went to Vava置, Kingdom of Tonga to scuba dive and swim with the humpback whales in July 2017. Humpbacks migrate from Antartica to the Tonga waters in late July through early October to have their calves, breed and then return to Antartica. We stayed at the Vava置 Reef Resort on Kapa island for 7 nights and it was entirely 5 stars. Resort has a total of 5, one bedroom bungalows with private bathrooms and fresh water showers. Ours was 50 feet to the ocean so we would occasionally hear the humpbacks surfacing and blowing out front during the day or night.
Meals were 5 star and the chefs (Hannes and Julia) were always attentive to making wonderful meals and desserts.
Several kayaks, paddle boards and a glass bottom, two person boat are provided and free for exploring the local waters and up close visits with the whales out front was a daily activity. A 5 minute walk in the jungle from the Vava置 Reef Resort are a small community of Tongan's and a Mormon Church and a Weslynn Church wth wonderful singing on Sunday mornings. The Tongan's were quite welcoming to us outside visitors.
We did 5 days of boat scuba dives and 1 day of swimming with the whales with [tonganexpeditions.com link]
out of Neiafu. The scuba boat would come to our resort boat dock at 8:30am and take us out for two tank dives. There were at most, 4 scuba divers most days and the same on the whale swimming days. The Dive Masters / instructors / guides were all very good and interested in pointing out the local critters and whales. Mariner痴 Cave and local area was very cool dive with many nudibranchs, clown fish and their anemone hosts. A shallow 30 foot second dive off the Falevai jetty on Kapa Island was spectacular and was a nursery area for thousands of juvenile fish hiding in large mounds of fire corals.
We absolutely recommend Vava置 Reef Resort and Topanganexpeditions when visiting Vava置 Kingdom of Tonga and would love to return soon.
