Comments Blue Planet Divers is a high quality operation with a majority of French divemasters and shop employees, resulting in a very lively ambiance. On the positive side, the dive operation is very efficient; the equipment in good shape; the water clear; and the sea life thriving. When we first dropped to 30 feet to gather, we almost landed on an octopus pulsing its way across the sandy bottom with an entourage of scavenger fish. There were numerous black-tipped sharks; unusual and colorful nudibranchs; a major sea snake; and very nice coral. Overall, very comparable to good Caribbean diving. 3300 baht for a two tank dive (approx. $90 U.S.)

On the mixed bag side, south Thailand is no longer an idyllic getaway. Koh Lanta is a full travel day south of Bangkok; has beautiful beaches; and lots of tacky development, somewhat reminiscent of, say, Marathon, Florida, but with much spicier food. The Crown Lanta is splendidly situated on a rocky point, with an excellent restaurant and a super beach bar overlooking the sea and facing the spectacular sunsets. A hundred down a path is famous Klong Dao Beach with wall to wall low rise resorts. We walked or bicycled to restaurants and shops in the nearby town.
