Comments I ended up unexpectedly spending the night on Phi Phi Island after learning that I couldn't take the afternoon ferry from Phuket to Krabi in one day. Since I had to spend one night, I decided to just make it two, and I'm glad I did. It's green and beautiful, with interesting geology. There are no cars on the island. The beaches are beautiful, the attitude is laid-back and there's a wide price range in accommodations. I arrived at the very beginning of the low season, so there were still plenty of people but it wasn't too crowded. I stayed in town (a guesthouse called The White, for approx. $30) rather than at a resort for access to a better variety of activities.
I did a two-tank dive with one dive off Phi Phi Leh (the main, populated island is technically known as Phi Phi Don) with the surface interval in a peaceful cove, and the second off another nearby smaller island. Visibility wasn't great due to recent rough weather and a full moon-related plankton bloom but the coral was nice and abundant, and there were lots of tropical fish, plus several moray eels and stingrays. The diving here was better than some of the places I dove in the Similan Islands on this trip. We went on a large boat with about 20 divers. All the shops here seem to own big boats, and then pool their divers on one boat during the low season. It was fine, though, as the boat was big enough to have plenty of room for everyone. Groups went into the water in shifts, so I didn't see lots of people underwater. The DM was good at finding and pointing out critters.
There are plenty of topside activities for non-diving companions. I highly recommend chartering a longtail boat for a tour to Phi Phi Leh, the island where The Beach was filmed. There are beautiful beaches, rock formations and hidden coves for swimming. For $50 you get a 3-hour private tour for two people. Leave by 7:30 and you can get there and away before the cattle boats from Phuket arrive.
If you are looking for a hard-core, dive-only vacation you'll do better somewhere else in SE Asia, but if you're looking for a tropical getaway with a variety of activities, Phi Phi is a great choice.
