Comments St Vincent is at the south end of the Caribbean and can take awhile to get there from Colorado, but it was worth the effort. You can make it in one day with some good flights, but we stayed overnight in Barbados. We used American Airlines to Barbados, and Liat Airlines to St Vincent. We did not have any issues with weight but did think the cost ($435 USD) of a 40 minute flight was excessive, but it was the only choice we had. American changed our return flight time from afternoon to 7am so we stayed overnight in Barbados on the return as well.
Upon arrival we grabbed a cab to take us to the Beachcomber Hotel. This hotel was suggested to us by Kay Wilson, owner of Indigo Dive before she relocated to the high priced Buccament Bay Resort. The Beachcomber is owned by Cheryl and her family. Cheryl and Kay are real good friends and between them they managed to get us from the Beachcomber to the Buccament Bay Resort and back for diving every day. Our last day of diving ended with a picnic with Kay, Cheryl, another friend, Lisa and her son DJ. They really do treat you as family. The Beachcomber is a nice hotel that has been here for quite a few years and we would stay there again. Our room had two single beds pushed together with separate bedding. The A/C worked fine and we never ran out of hot water. The restaurant has enough selection for a week’s stay especially with Kay supplying some lionfish to the cook after a successful hunt on a day of diving. Kay is trying to manage the numbers of lionfish by hunting and collecting them on most dives. She has built out of 6-inch diameter PVC pipe a holding bin for the fish she spears and donates them to the Buccament Bay Resort and wherever else her dive clients might be staying for a fish fry. It was quite delicious.
The diving is from a nice dive boat capable of holding about 12 divers comfortably, but we never had more than 10. All the normal safety equipment is maintained on board such as oxygen kit, first aid kit, life preservers, radio, etc. Dive sites run the entire length of the islands leeward side, but Indigo Dive sticks mostly to the north where there are good reefs and lots of small fish in huge schools. There are also some critters such as red banded shrimps, arrow crabs, unique sea stars, porcelain crabs, but maybe not a prolific as diving in the south with Bill Tewes (Retired but still owns) Dive St. Vincent. We also saw flat tail eels, lobster including slipper and spiny, cuttlefish, seahorse, school of barracuda, flying gurnards, lots of lionfish, and one 6-ft tarpon.
