Comments We stayed at Dennis's Hideaway on Mayreau. No problem getting there by ferry from St. Vincent. The owner Dennis is a very friendly, down to earth guy. The rooms were well maintained. All potable water on the island is collected rainwater, so usage minimization is a necessity, but it also means the water pressure in the shower is low. Beautiful view of the Tobago Cays from the back of the church on the top of the hill. We spent a relaxing day off from diving to go hiking the trail that goes around the east side of the island, good for a picnic and to sit and read. Disproportionate number of restaurants in the tiny village on the island. Dennis's cooking at the restaurant at Dennis's Hideaway was very good if not inexpensive. Also ate at Island Paradise, friendly owner and food was good value for money. Only drawback to staying at Dennis's, which is right in the village, is the karaoke and disco Friday and Saturday nights in the village which goes on until midnight. Otherwise, the early morning wake up call with the roosters and goats was a daily event, but then again this is a slice of village life, one could always stay at a private resort for a more artificial experience.
As Grenadines Dive is on Union Island we were picked up each morning and dove locally around Mayreau and the Tobago Cays which was very pleasant diving. Both crew on the Grenadines Dive boat were Dive Masters, Jeremiah was captaining and Barry went with us in the water. We did 2 or 3 dives a day. Barry floated above us holding on to the surface buoy line as most of the dives were drift dives; he let us go at the pace we wanted. He pointed out the larger fish and life we missed while we were poking around closer to the reef looking for smaller creatures. Currents were steady, but mild, only one dive did one have to hold on to something if one wanted to stay put, but that was just to avoid strenuous finning. The reefs were in very good condition with lots of soft corrals and sponges, particularly The Garden and End-of-Reef sites. Many schools of medium and small fish, more than at St. Vincent where we were the week before. A few larger trigger fish and grouper. Also saw reef sharks, spotted rays, and hawksbill turtles, and one enormous green eel at the wreck just off from the Mayreau public wharf.
