Comments Our family recently made the trip to St Lucia to experience the gorgeous scenery around the Pitons and to try out the scuba diving as well. I have to say that the World Heritage Site encompassing Petite and Gros Piton did not disappoint, this has to be one of the most gorgeous locations in the world.
The surprise for us was the quality of the scuba diving and the great experience we had with our dive master, Chester Nathoniel of Action Adventure Divers. We had rented a great villa on the slopes of Gros Piton, so Chester picked us up every morning on the beach immediately next to Petite Piton. Now this is not the location for big fish and in fact we did not see any sharks or rays during our stay, but the reef is very healthy and there are an abundance of your typical reef fish along with many lobsters, turtles and eels. On one dive we were in the middle of a school of about a hundred medium size reef fish, an experience that is relatively rare even in the better known dive locations.
I was diving with my wife, our adult son and our two grandsons, ages 12 and 14. We had the entire boat to our own family and that is certainly a great advantage over the typical cattle boat style of diving. Chester is great at pointing out the small critters that you would never notice otherwise. He is also a great source of information for local restaurants and activities.
The highlight of our diving was the experience our grandsons had hunting for Lionfish, an invasive species that is detrimental to virtually all reef fish life. Under Nathoniel’s guidance, they were able to spear a number of these fish, which were then cleaned and fried up for our lunch, quite delicious!
All in all, a very special trip to a unique location both above and below the water.

UW Photo Comments The underwater pictures we took were with our Lumix TS3, good to about 15 meters of depth. As such, I wont attempt to rate this for those with a full set of SLR gear and flash equipment. It is 6 pack diving in a relatively small boat (you can see the boat on the website). That said, Chester will go out of his way to accommodate your needs.
