Comments For my dive Scuba Safaris operated an old, battered, patched, semi-rotten dive boat with unreliable outboard motors. There were places on the deck of the dive boat so rotten I was afraid I might fall through if I put my full weight on them. After our first dive the crew had to do mechanical work on one of the motors before it could be used to move us to the second dive site.

Scuba Safaris advertises that they have Nitrox available and their website touts the advantages of using Nitrox over regular air. When I arrived and asked for Nitrox I was told they did not have any available.

The rental equipment supplied by Scuba Safaris was as old, shabby, threadbare, corroded and generally as worn out as the boat. The wet suits we were given had holes in them and were so old the neoprene was compressed and deteriorated to the point that they offered little warmth. We were told by the dive master that the water was 82 degrees and we would be warm in these wet suits. My dive computer recorded a temperature on the first dive of 75 and on the second 77. I and I believe others on the trip were deeply chilled after each dive.

The first regulator they dive staff put on my air tank malfunctioned when tested and had to be replaced by another.

A variety of basic safety rules were ignored by the dive crew on the boat. Scuba tanks used for Nitrox and regular air were used interchangeably. When I saw the staff loading tanks on the boat I observed that most were clearly labeled Nitrox tanks. I questioned the staff and was told they were actually filled with regular air and "It is too hard to get the Nitrox labels off."

The only pre-dive briefing we got was when one of the divers asked what fish and sea creatures we might see. I cannot remember ever going on a dive when the dive master in the briefing did not remind divers to make the safety stop. No such advice was given and no safety stops were indicated during the dive by the dive staff.

The dive staff on the boat was very young, and while they were all competent divers in their own right they did not exhibit any understanding of their responsibility for the divers in their charge. They charged about looking for sea life to point out, but they were often far out ahead of their customers and only occasionally checking on their status. On the first dive they were heavily focused on killing lion fish which they brought up with them and filleted for their dinner that evening.

No diver should go anywhere near this company.
