Comments The bad: Credit cards were only accepted at the hotel and the dive shop, all else was cash. Limited restaurants but you didn't go hungry. The good: This island is the Caribbean of Gardner McKay (Google him) and of what Jimmy Buffet sings about. Laid back and relaxed. No schedules just go when you want to go. Diving was super, tons of large tropical fish, BIG lobsters on every dive, sharks, turtles and rays everywhere. One one dive we must have seen 12 different large rays. Small stuff too like Pike Blennys and Jaw fish. Many crabs, etc. Statia reminds me of how the Caribbean was 25 years ago. You can imagine your Captain Don landing on an undiscovered island and unlocking its underwater secrets for the first time. On our first dive, on a wreak, I dropped down the line and to my left were two rays swimming along with a turtle between them. Around the back side of the ship were 25 lobsters crowded under the wreak on the sand. Glen and Michael run a very relaxed and easy going operation where a true diver can experience what us old timers always talk about. The Old Gin House is run by a young Dutch couple Dominic and Wauter (Walter to us Americans). Rooms were very nice and the AC worked great. Nice little bar and breakfast was good. Not enough business to have the restaurant open the rest of the day but the hotel was great about finding us places to eat so be adventurous. One night we hired a local to cook our group up a BBQ. Fresh lobster (Statia has a UW Park and some shared use areas to fish), grilled fish and fish soup with salads. Best meal of the trip. Glen and Michael and Matt their DM joined use and we ate, talked and drank the night away. I haven't had that experience in a very long time. If you are looking for the type of diving that made diving exciting Statia is the place for you. Consider a two island trip as we did, Saba and Statia. I would start with Statia and end with Saba. Check out my comments on Saba for this same time period.
