Comments [None]Saba is a small beautiful island with mountains rising up from the ocean. The people are friendly and helpful. I stayed at Juliannas. It is a nice clean place and well maintained. The Tropics resturant is across the street and they provided breakfast every morning. Sea Saba is a 1st class dive operation. They would have a cab pick us up every morning at 8:45 and take us first to the dive shop. There they would ask us if we wanted them to make reservations for dinner and if we needed a cab for dinner. All you had to do if you needed something was ask and they would take care of it. They had stocked the refrigerator in our room with drinks for us so we had something when we arrived. They really care about their customers.

We would go out and first do a deep dive and then spend the surface interval on the boat close to shore in calm water. Then we would do a shallower dive close to shore. Visiblility was not very good while I was there. The close in coral had a lot of sand on it. It looked like a hurricane had covered it. I asked several of the divemasters about it and they said the currents caused it and the currents would change in a couple of weeks and clean the corals. We had very little current while I was there, but they all said the same thing.

The pinnacle diving was about 110 to 90 feet so the bottom time was short and light limited. They would really be great dives if they were about 50 feet. There was a lot of fish and some big fish on most of them. The shallow dives close to shore had smaller fish.

We saw several nurse sharks and a couple of reef sharks in the blue. We saw some nice size jacks and barracuda. There were some really friendly turtles that would come right up to you. There was also the usual assortment of reef fish and some eels.

I asked about a 3rd dive or night dive and they offered to take me out, even if I was the only one. I never did go out on a 3rd dive, but there were new people going out several times in the afternoon after we got back in. I decided to do some hiking around the island in the afternoon instead. There are steep trails that go up the mountains. In fact, everything is steep in Saba.

The only water on the island is from rain that they capture so they are pretty careful with it. Sea Saba took care of our equipment for us, but it was only hosed off rather than a big rinse tank. I showered with my camera to wash it off. That is about the only complaint I have. Saba is a great vacation destination and the diving is typical good Caribbean diving. The people are the most helpful and friendly I have met.
