Comments After a week in St Maarten and poor diving, it was time to visit Saba and kick this dive vacation in to gear. Now, rather than writing a novel here, I would just review the reader reports in the 2006 Chapbook (came in the mail today) and add my comments to the mix. First, Saba was small, 5 square miles of volcano. That means one thing, if you are weary of heights like me (understatement) this island will be a challenge (Challenge #1) to you. Don’t let that stop you; just don’t look as they drive you up and down the mountain. You can get there by boat (The Edge) or plane (WinAir via St Maarten). If you do the plane as we did, know that you are landing on the smallest commercial runway in the world (#2). We stayed at the Cottage Club. We had our own little cottage that was simple, but had everything. You could whip up a great meal, or go out to one of the restaurants in town (go to Brigadoons). Ask for cottage 1 or 2. They have the best view since they are on the cliff (#3). There are three dive company’s to choose from, but from our research, we chose what we felt was the best, Sea Saba. They have a great operation given the fact they are on such a small island (1500 residents). They have two good boats and don’t take over ten divers on each. The boat had a head and covered area. Saba boasts great pinnacle diving and some of the best coral reefs in the Caribbean, and they were right. The reefs were comparable to Cozumel and the fish life was good. Because we were there during a stormy period, the fish life was only good and not great, but I’m told that changes. In fact, the owner, Lynn, emailed me today and told me that the water was calm and the Eagle Rays had returned (damn). One of the highlights for me was seeing Elk Horn Coral thriving on the reef. This type of coral is spectacular to see and I have not had the pleasure of seeing it in the ocean before. Saba was a keeper for me because it offered so many different types of dives. I liked the variety and wanted more. Unfortunately, we were only there for a few days of diving and hiking. And on that note, make sure you schedule time to hike. There are spectacular views and you can choose the level of difficulty. Make sure you take a day off diving (do to deco problems) and do the Mt Scenery hike. This put every other hike we have done to rest. There is no real way to explain it, so just go and do it. Oh, and get to the gym ahead of time.
