Comments We returned to Egypt to dive with our original dive instructor (1998) Dr. Hussein Ramadan (really great instructor who works out of the Maadi House in Cairo). He has been mentioned a few times in Undercurrents. He chose El Naga for several reasons: first, it's relatively small and has few crowds compared to Hurghada; second, he gets super service there; and third, as an American employee - as is his instructor wife - the US Embassy forbids employees or their families from going to Sharm El Sheikh. The diving was mostly shore diving, but we did go out on a boat from Safaga one day and on a Zodiac from the resort. Service was really outstanding. The coral was as we remembered it - some of the best in the world. However, the large schools of fish that we remembered from Sharm El Sheikh so many years ago were few. We did see , turtles and rays and one shark. The sealife was unconcerned with us, so we got some great up-close looks at fish and critters. The shore dive reefs had relatively little current and were easily accessed. The boat dive reefs occasionally had fair currents, but not overwhelming. The resort was pleasant, but not a 5 star (I'd give it 2 1/2), but the rooms were clean and comfortable (read that air conditioned) with fridges. Lunch and dinner were buffet, but very tasty. Breakfasts were to order, with lots of fresh orange juice, omelets, beef sausage, etc. Nescafe instead of fresh brewed, but that seems standard in Egypt. The staff was really great - carried all the gear down to the shore or boat, helped you if you needed it, etc. There were rinse tanks available at the for both gear and cameras at the dive shop/gear storage area. This would not be a high-roller choice, but we really enjoyed the lack of crowds in and out of the water and the pleasant pace.

UW Photo Comments While rinse tanks were available (one restricted to cameras and regs), there was really no place to work on your camera except in your room (I know because I drowned my Canon when the case closure spring broke).

I spent much of 2015 and 2016 in Egypt and dove with Dr. Hussein at Sharm el Naga many, many times. The resort deserves the ratings provide in this excellent writeup. The rooms are just OK, but the food, service, and general attitude of the place is truly special, as is the house reef. I took hundreds of gorgeous underwater photos there. A really great resort far from the madding crowds at Sharm el Sheikh (where I was first certified in 1987).
