Comments I flew into Hurghada where I overnighted, then overland 141 mi. south to Port Ghalib, to meet the deluxe Red Sea Aggressor and 18 other divers -- 5 Americans 4 Canadians, 5 Dutch, 2 German, 1 Spanish, 1 Malaysian. All my arrangements were made through Jan Stogner of Caribbean Pacific Tours and ground arrangements and ground tour guides in Luxor and Cairo were through Aggressor. An amazing week on to the Red Sea of incredibly beautiful diving, great accommodations, terrific food, great crew and delightful fellow divers. Three dives 2 day one night, then motoring through the night to the next reef. The very first dive we saw 3 whale sharks! Then on to 3 days in Luxor. My guide said I was his first client in 7 months! Something like 570 of 600 the Nile river cruise boats are mothballed in long rows near the bridge to the Valley of the Kings.

Of course, Karnak and Luxor temples were amazing, as were the valleys of the Kings and Queens and the colossi and the city of Luxor.

Then off to Cairo, where I stayed in a dumpy hotel, with lots of character, called the Pyramid View, which was across from the Sphinx and probably the very closest of all hotels to the pyramids. I loved Cairo — except the insane driving, and the complete lack of trash collection. What an tremendous construction boom, cranes everywhere— unlike the Red Sea coast with dozens and dozens of partially finished now abandoned resort complexes all along the 100 mile drive south.

I loved the camel ride past the pyramids, and Khufu’s ship. I did climb down into his tomb in the center of the Great Pyramid, by myself. Next time I’ll remember to bring a small flashlight. I kept worrying about what I would do if the lights went out. Finally, a day in the old market, an evening on the Nile boar cruise with the whirling dervish and belly dancers, a day at the Cairo Museum and a day at Saqqara! Wow.

UW Photo Comments My camera failed and they lent me a GoPro, but there was an amazing professional videographer/dive master aboard and his video was so fabulous that I stopped shooting and just brought his video home. It is amazing.
