Comments First dive is usually off wall- wall starts at 50-60 feet-goes down to 150 feet- then angles at 180-200 feet to spill off again to 1000 feet. Reefs off wall look in pretty good shape- some bleaching, but not as bad as other parts of caribbean. whip-wire and black coral on wall as shallow as 60 feet-unusual in Caribbean. If you like walls- this is a good option if you are in PR. Some decent brain corals on rim of wall. Good sized elephant ears and other sponges on wall, as well as some fair sized pillar corals which appeared to be in good shape, in shallower areas.

Second dives were usually reef/ ledge at 40-50 feet. mid level reefs were in pretty good shape, not much algae, some bleaching. reefs did not look beaten up by divers. Due to being fairly isolated, this area is pretty clean. Due to apparent overfishing- did not see any large grouper, snapper or other large fish. Plenty of smaller fish. Supposedly, the PR government is planning to designate this special area to be a "no fishing zone" in a year or so, which should help.

Dive operation carried your gear to and from the nice sized boat, assisted with set up (if you needed it)and walked you to back of boat. Easy-in-out ladder. Had Oxygen, large first aid kit and all emergency gear was pointed out and described. Captain "Bill" Winnie did a good job managing and positioning the boat, as well as covering all safety issues. Had a nice tag line out, as well as a tank with two regulators hung at 50ft for low air "emergencies". DM "Tony" Rosario did a good job finding some nice macro subjects- including some very large crabs and a nice little arrow crab. Dive Site descriptions were too brief- could have provided more info before the dive. Handed out towels after dive. Provided fruit and iced water/ sodas.

Air in tanks was clean and dry- dive shop small- but appeared to be well-managed. No Nitrox- all tanks were aluminum 80s. Had decent inventory of rental gear.

Copamarina Resort is on the south coast- which has better weather and cleaner water than north coast of PR. It is in the middle of the United Nations designated Guanico Dry Forest reserve- which is nice- good hiking and unusual birds, some petroglyphs, and interesting trees. Nice, clean resort- but more for couples etc. two good pools- two hot tubs. Restaurant had slow service, food was pretty good. Could not order food (not even snacks)from the bar. I went to towns of Guanica and Yauco for lunch/ dinner and found very reasonable food/ bars (10 minute drive). Plan on 2-3 hour drive from San Juan, depending on traffic.

Sea Ventures has two operations- one in Fajardo, near San Juan, which is poor diving and mainly for beginners, if making reservations, make sure you book for Guanica.
