Comments After having a wonderful time the previous year in Dumaguete, I decided to return to the Philippines to see the Puerto Galera area this time and the animals were indeed different. Every dive provided a new surprise. We saw pygmy seahorses and blue ring octopusses several times. My only complaint is that I did not like the divemaster trying to make the octopus move using his pointer. Also, he could have said something about divers taking turns observing creatures and not acting like they owned them because they had an expensive camera. If you want to replay and check each photo, it should be done on the sidelines while others look at the fish. There were myriads of nudibranchs and an entire colony of giant clams. Our dive groups were small--six max--and we never dived in an area where there were crowds of other divers. On one dive we saw octopusses mating and we were a couple feet away. You could dive five times a day if you wanted to and dives usually lasted 50 minutes or longer. There are no piers in the Philippines so you do need to wade back to shore at low tide, being careful not to step on starfish. It really wasn't a problem. The trip to Verde Island is well worth the extra charge. There are huge seamounts with large schools of fish. The food was good-not great-but you could make your own meal whenever you wanted by choosing from several dozen ingredients which they then would cook in a wok and serve with rice or noodles. Did I mention the frogfish who were almost 2 feet across? The architecture of the resort is wild--like living in the Flintstones era, but the rooms are very comfortable with good air-conditioning and fans. Unless you want extra exercise after diving, be sure to request a room that is not on top of the hill since the resort is on several levels. While I was there, a woman fainted (not hydrated enough)next to me by the dive cubbies and medical help arrived within a minute. All in all, great diving and a high class resort.
