Dumaguete is a pretty nice town accessible directly from flights from Manila. The Atlantis resort is just a 30 minute ride south of the airport. This is a very nice resort in a grove of palm trees, with 35 very comfortable air conditioned rooms, a good pool, and an excellent restaurant with an American Chef (Jake from New York) who really goes the extra mile to find out what you like and then make it the way you like it. Breakfast starts it off with a big buffet with many western and Asian choices.

The Atlantis dive operation is very professional and well organized, and they know how to treat photographers. The two wooden pangas can carry 10 to 12 divers, but we never had more than six divers with our two guides. Apo Island trips are arranged every couple of days, and this is the most marketed dive site. It’s a long boat ride (90 minutes) but it has really nice soft corals when the current is flowing, plus lots of tropical fish, a few turtles, sea snakes, and good visibility. However, I thought the best diving was at the numerous shallow sites along the black sand beach close to the resort. Two small wrecks have a great variety of macro critters including ghost pipefish, nudibranchs, lionfish, banded pipefish, decorator crabs, gobies, shrimps, frog fish, dragonettes, sand dollars, etc. We saw several Pegasus sea moths on several dives too, plus juvenile cuttlefish, snake eels, and other macro critters. There was also a Mandarin Fish dive at dusk, but we barely saw three of them. Overall this is a very nice resort with great food and excellent macro diving.
