Comments The Nautilus Swell is a refurbished tugboat and set up in a most pleasing way for divers. Each room had a private shower and bathroom. Plenty of hot water which was nice for Alaska! Food was plentiful and delicious, with two breakfasts each morning, snacks available during the day, and hot chocolate following the diving. The crew was engaging and very helpful, and the captain was constantly going the extra mile to make the trip a success for every diver. One diver lost luggage, and the captain made a special trip to go to the airport and helped recover the luggage. Another diver forgot his drysuit underwear and the captain let him use his personal undersuit. Usually three dives per day were on offer as well as a variety of other activities.
The diving itself was unique and spectacular, world class in all respects. Wolf eels, giant pacific octopus, humpback whales, pacific whiteside dolphins, up front and very entertaining stellar sea lions, as well as very colorful walls were on offer. Additionally, the invertebrate life such as crabs, anemonies, jellyfish, starfish etc. was plentiful and beautiful. Shore excursions and beach bonfires added variety, as did trips to ice floes and glacier fields, watching glaciers break off and plunge into the ocean was breathtaking. Scrambling and jumping off icebergs, and kayaking around icebergs was also on the itinery. The above water topography and landscapes seen while visiting the various dive sites was breathtakingly gorgeous. Also nice was the chance to go bear watching and eagle/bird watching. A very diverse and exiting liveaboard experience for sure. Warm water divers will never know! Alaska needs to be classified as among the world's great dive destinations...and it is right here in the USA!
