Comments The East Cape (Los Barriles/Buena Vista) is known for deep sea fishing - divers are in the minority. That said, this is some of my favorite diving. The Sea of Cortez hosts incredibly huge fish, and schools of them. I have never seen puffer fish school anywhere but here. The parrot fish routinely rival the triggers in size, and both are bigger than in the Caribbean. The dive operator is an American who has lived in the East Cape for 20 years. His shop picks up from all the hotels around the area. There is a marine park (Cabo Pulmo) that offers great 50-60 foot dives, so you can be down as long as the tank will last, and the divemasters don't have a time limit, at least not an enforced one. All dive sites are about a 45 minute boat ride, and surface intervals are on the boat. All boats are small and hold only six - my husband and I are routinely the only two on the boat. The hotel is family run (separate from Vista Sea Sport), and a bit worn, but it does the trick and has a large pool with a swim-up bar and attentive bartender. Most of the guests are men who are deep sea fishing (I am typically one of very few females there), so they look at you funny when you say you are diving, especially for a whole week. But, I always get the last laugh, as we are usually the only ones at the dive sites. I would recommend this spot if you are looking for something more unusual than the Caribbean but that is close, and it is great during hurricane season, as the water is warmest then and hurricanes rarely go through the Pacific.
