Comments This was a last minute trip and I decided to bring my dive gear along to check out Cabo diving. Not many of my colleagues have been diving here and it has not really been high on my list of places to go purely for diving. This was a family vacation so I took my gear and did a two tank dive on two separate days by myself. I chose Manta Dive because they were one of the few operators in Cabo that supply Nitrox.. They were very professional from start to finish.
Check in at the dive shop was easy. They are a full-scale rental operation as well, and I rented a BC from them which was in excellent condition. They enforced masking and social distancing in the shop. Once on the boat masks were not required. Boats were limited to 50% capacity. Personally I felt a bit too close to others on boat, but wearing mask would be protective. If you are doing multiple days of diving, they will supply lockers to store your gear, and will assist with cleaning your gear after the dives, which was much appreciated.
My first day was a two tank dive at the Cabo Marine Park, North Wall and Pelican Rock. Water temp was 84° with minimal current. There were many colorful tropical fish, more so than I have seen in many Caribbean places in the last few years. There were octopus, lobster, small rays and large eels, mostly volcanic rock with little coral. Several large schools of Jack and other fish. Depth from 50 to 80 feet. Sand falls at North Wall were lovely.
At the Lands End point, there are a group of sea lions that are often in the water with divers and a recently discovered ship wreck. Unfortunately there was too much current that day due to incoming tropical storm to allow us in the water while I was there. Although I think it would’ve been an excellent dive if you have a chance.
My second day was to the Corridor which has five dive sites available, unfortunately the tropical storm offshore limited some of the underwater visibility but there was a pleasant current. The two dive sites we visited were fairly shallow with Max depth about 40 to 50 feet. Most of the Dive conducted in about 25 feet. The diving was nice but we did not see many creatures. As opposed to the marine park, there was a lot of coral here. We saw several eagle rays, southern ray feeding in the sand, but not as many tropical fish as the marine park. But again open sites limited by current while I was there. Would like to go back and dive the other sites which by description sound awesome.
I didn’t bring a camera on this trip nor did any of the other divers I was with, There was not a Camera table available on either of the boats that I was on.
Manta offers other dives to Pulmo and Gordo Banks that are longer trips that I did not have opportunity to try, but sound awesome.
I appreciated that they made an effort to place divers in small groups of similar experience.. My second day there were five divers in my group all of whom had very similar air consumption making for a very nice day without early termination of any of the dives. My first day was I fortunate to be diving with the dive master alone.
I felt the price of the diving was very reasonable, the boats were in good condition, dive masters were attentive and knowledgeable. They made efforts to enforce Covid safety.
I am typically a live aboard diver, I do not often stay at a resort and dive with a land based operator. I was pleasantly surprised with the diving, and I would definitely return. Since I am the only diver in my family, it makes for a nice trip when I can dive in the morning and reconnect with them in the afternoon.
