Comments "This feels wild," I told my wife. "It's like we're in the great outdoors, all to ourselves, unexplored . . . " And that is EXACTLY how I'd summarize Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park. We drove a 6 mile dusty dirt road down from the mountains through the hot desert to arrive at the sleepy little outpost of Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort. (Yes, you can easily use a regular rental car, no need for a 4x4.) Friendly smiles greeted us, and the warm service never ended. After a short "get to know each other," the dive shop told us "You guys have a lot of experience, so we're gonna set up your own boat trips, so you can dive separate from the 10AM day trippers that come here daily from Cabo." And they did just that- special accommodation for just my wife and I, and the couple of others who were regular divers . . . our own boat, our own private trips. The water was turning from the normally poorer viz of late spring, to the beautiful clearness of late summer, sometimes a ton of microscopic krill or plankton, like a snowstorm, and usually clearing to 40 or more feet. Thermoclines were abundant, so dress warm! A few dives were a bit quiet, but then the underwater topography was always interesting. But on many of the dives- I hate to use teenager terminology, but OMG! Nearing the end of one 45 min dive, I swam into a swarm, a big swarm, no, a GIANT swarm of thousands and thousands of 18in+ jacks. They swirled around me until it was time to surface, and I have the video to prove it! Taking my first breath of surface air, I was exclaiming "Holy Beejeezus! That was un-f-ing un-believable! And I've been to Palau twice! I've never seen anything like that!" On several dives, rays in the 20's to the 100's were jumping high into the air to breach and slap themselves onto the sea around our boat. Big schools of mini to major size fish of myriad kinds on many dives. Sometimes strong current, sometimes calm, sometimes quiet, sometimes wild, sometimes cold, sometimes warm, always adventurous. One time I saw two other dive boats on the water, but we usually had the entire sea to ourselves. Make sure you drive the dirt road to Arballitos snorkeling area and swim out to the south point- a beautiful shallow coral garden with mini-schools to mimic the major-schools out in the open water. Our primary dive guide, instructor Amanda, worked her skinny butt off to make every dive enjoyable, and she was every single interaction a bundle of smiles and laughter and hard work and professionalism, always helping and aiming to please- just like all of her colleagues. The resort and restaurant staff were also super kind and helpful- good people everywhere. Bring cash or pesos! Only one restaurant takes credit cards, and the other 3 don't. Beautiful rugged natural beach for day walks or night time incredibly starry skies. This is a wonderfully unique location, very remote, very calming, very zen- just make sure you check the viz conditions for the time of year you'll visit, and be patient with your dives- it's wild and unpredictable, but you'll hit the big marine life so many times, that you are guaranteed to have unique memories that will last for a lifetime.
