Comments Our 2nd time out of Athens on the beautiful Athos a specially modified & equipped Nautitech 47 catamaran built to offer unique dives. Captain APOSTOLOS RODITIS, had a wonderful addition - Laura as hostess. A trip coordinator joining us as DM was Paul H, a principal of Blue Green Expeditions travel agency. He is a PADI instructor and a pharmacist at home. Four ensuite staterooms allowed for 8 passengers comfort & privacy. Our trip through the Aegean & Ionian Seas gave us plenty of time to appreciate Greek island towns and villages as well as dive up-to 3 dives a day. Starting from Athens our Captain’s itinerary was to sail around the 3 fingers of Peloponnisos. We sailed to Monevasia where we hiked the historic town. Our next day started anchored off beautiful Simos Beach. We then dove a modern shipping wreck. Motored to Neápolis where we went to the fabulous underground Cave of Kastania . Snorkeled at Pavlopétri , a sunken Bronze Age settlement with a large green turtle .
The next morning I jumped off the bow for a morning swim into the Ionian Sea. Delicious! Actually tasted sweet! Clear visibility at depth, ~45-60’. Then we were off to dive a boulder rock island offshore. We saw many caves from the surface & we were not disappointed under water. Huge stalagmites loomed to the sea floor. In the shadows was a cave I had passed but Paul H & Ronnie, another diver, explored and found an underwater cave - shrimp heaven! The wall, ceiling & floor were covered with peppermint shrimp-many with eggs. Further deep in the shadows were larger unknown fish. Another day we walked Fort Neókastro, the fortress of New Navarino, an Ottoman fortification near Pylos which contained two fabulous exhibitions of Greek historic finds of underwater ancient cities and ship wrecks which included some sites that we had dived on! Moored out Sfaktiria island for the evening. We bbq grouper, snappers and parrot fish. Awoke at anchor in Strofades islands. Dove on NW coast of Arpyia. We saw large moon rocks, and a few grouper. I spotted a couple of slipper lobsters . Apo went into action. Escaping his grasp twice, Ronnie took a try & caught both. They were quite tasty the next day for lunch as lobster pasta! In Laganas Bay near Zakynthos I spotted 3 octopus. During our 14 day exploratory adventure we dove 12 times, climbed and walked around 5 forts, and visited 8 villages. Our meals were consistently fresh. For breakfast eggs if you desired but always fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, cereals, toast, peanut butter, Nutella and honey. Lunches were pasta, or fish. Dinners on the grill were chops, or fresh fish. Of course there was always Greek salad, olives, and bread. Deep and technical diving are available with prior notice.
