Comments LONG trip from LAX. Singapore Air great service in coach. Note: some days flite n/s to Singapore, others through Narita Japan, must deplane/security/reboard. RON 17 hr, (hotel $) in Singapore(by airport comparison LAX is awful), 4.5 hrs to Male, arrive 2200 then to boat. Underway next AM, less than half full for trip. 130 ft boat(brand new), original set up for couples, needs/planned changes for solo divers, 2/room. Bar(reasonable), small hot tub, spacious, lots of movies available. DIve from dhoani(dive boat)-long thin design, enter water either side only, restricts entry rate in strong currents. Broke down 1 day, replacement had "dive club yard sale" of gear set up for nite dive, very confusing. Viz highly variable from some OK to many great. Few dives with strong currents, manta cleaning station(super) shark channel(zip) open water recoveries, float/line a must. Snorkel with juvenile whale shark on 1 dive. Coral great shape, lots of critters & fish. Thai cook-love Thai-but meals somewhat limited selections. Prior live-aboards 4+ dives/d, Orion rigid 3/d due to "depth & currents" fair amount of time with naps/reading. Stayed close to arrival island on 9d trip, entire chain has 175+ dive sites-further with full boat? Crew, including bar keeper, attentive, some speak little english. Several nite dives, nice reefs, some motoring about to find them. Depart boat 1000, fight 11 hrs later, minimal options in Male, Muslim country-beer at a/p hotel only, day room available-even longer hours going home. Worth considering more touring after 11000 miles one way. Note-personal bias is that expectations for a trip double every 8 hours of travel. remember this rule when evaluating a near 2 day door-to-door venture.
