Comments The Maldives is a long ways away so the flights are a little grueling so be prepared. The Maldives is a lot of water with lots of small islands mixed in. The airport is on its own island with boat docks to pick up and drop off passengers. We were picked up and taxied out to the Adora for a week on the liveaboard. The accommodations we excellent. Our cabin, one of the nicest, was roomy and very comfortable. Lounge area very nice. Food was good and accommodated various food issues, although not spectacular. The staff was excellent and always ready to help. On the dive boat they even helped put on fins, a first for me. The diving was from a second boat that followed along the entire trip. The gear was left on the second boat. Diving was leisurely for a liveaboard, normally 3 dives a day. Actual diving was all good with some great mixed in. It was all rather easy, not much current, flat surface, good viz, warm. The great parts where lots of reef fish, many times in large schools, the mantas, and the whale sharks. The fish were of different varieties than we usually see which was nice. We saw several Octopus that were far more out in the open than we had ever seen before. Some free swimming eels too. The manta were in a group which also brought in groups of divers from other boats. The manta were great, the other divers not so much. We ran into a whale shark near some resorts which meant lots of other boats and people. It was crazy. I would guess there were nearly 100 people in the water with the one whale shark. Needless to say, he did not stick around. I didn't bother getting in. Later, further out, we ran into a whale shark in about 50 feet of water cruising by. He ignored us but passed within 5-10 feet. It was a great moment and some great video to go with. We did go on a shallow (25 feet) night dive with lots of sharks and rays. It was a location where the sharks came often and we were instructed to kneel on the bottom. There must have been some bait involved since lots of sharks, rays and others were zipping in and out between us. Most of us had a good time. Some newer divers were a little freaked by the sharks so close. Overall this was great trip. Because of the distance I am not likely to get back (I'm 68 and running out of time!) but am very happy I went.
