Comments Maldives consist of over 1200 islands. Single resorts on some; islanders on others. Transportation from the airport island to a resort is either by speedboat or sea plane. We arrived at 4 a.m. (instead of 1 a.m. due to delays in Sri Lanka). Our boat was waiting for us when we finally arrived. It was a short 20 minute run to the island from the airport.

Paradise Island is one of the larger resorts in the Maldives. Service was good, although not overly catering. Internet available in the main lodge. Accomodations include individual bungalows and water bungalows. Very clean rooms with inside and outside showers, TV, AC, well stocked minibar; grounds are well groomed. Several restaurants on site. We prepaid for full board (3 meals) in the main restaurant and didn't feel as though we needed to eat anywhere else. The main restaurant offered a very good variety of food.

Delphis Dive Center (www.delphisdiving.com) on the island is a PADI operation, very well run. Nitrox is available. The dive boat is very roomy and comfortable for the very short ride to the dive sites. They put up to about 20 divers on the boat but split the divers into groups of 4-5 with their own divemaster and then stagger the water entries so the divers aren't exploring the same part of the reef on top of one another.

Snorkelers have plenty to see from the shore and pier. The fish were abundant and varied. No coral. Beautiful beaches.

Although the Malidives do not have many American visitors (mostly European, Russian, Japanese)the resort deals primarily in USD. If you pay the dive shop in cash there are excellent discounts. Credit cards are accepted at the shop and at the resort.

UW Photo Comments The fishlife was incredible! No shortage of subjects to photograph. Saw a large variety of moray eels, some longer than 6 feet. There were numerous lobsters, various types of butterfly fish; banded shrimp; manta shrimp; lionfish; Indian bannerfish; triggerfish; unicorn fish; Napolean wrasse.

Soft coral was only abundant in areas where the current was the strongest; otherwise it was sparse along the reefs. The reefs were not abundant in coral - some hard corals, sea fans, etc.
