Comments This report is part of a two week trip that included Sipadan Island and the Similan Islands in Thailand. You must dive Sipadan at least once in your dive career. The resort was attractive and the staff was friendly. My room was nice and the food was decent. Meals were included and served buffet style. The dive operation was good. I would stay here and dive here again if I go back. I’m not sure, however, if I would go back here for diving again any time soon. The best diving was at Sipadan island which was excellent. But due to conservation restrictions you can only dive the island with a permit. You must stay for 5 days at the resort in order to get one day of diving at Sipadan Island. They arrange your day at Sipadan so that you can do four dives by leaving early in the morning. You eat breakfast and lunch on the island and return to Mabul Island in the afternoon. Traveling this far for one day of excellent diving probably doesn’t make much sense. But Sipidan dives are so excellent that it's worth it. The diving at Mabul Island and Kalapai Island is good, to very good, but visibility was not nearly as good as Sipadan Island. The shore diving on the house reef in front of the resort was very good. The house reef visibility was poor but there was so much to see that this dive was surprisingly good. The boat diving was fairly regimented. Our group of nine divers was assigned to one boat with a boat driver and two divemasters. Entries were via a backroll. Re-entry to the boat was by climbing a ladder in full gear or they would drag your gear on board if you wanted to take gear off in the water. We dove as a group in buddy pairs. One DM leads the group and the other follows up at the tail of the group. They weren’t strict about buddy pairs. Photographers who wanted to do their own thing could go alone far from their buddy. We finished the dive as a group. I wish that dive times could be a little longer, most were 50 minutes, but I didn’t have a lot of extra air remaining on most dives.

UW Photo Comments I'm not a photographer. Dive boats didn't have a special place for cameras. Cameras placed in plastic gear storage totes at the stern of the boat.
