Comments [Note: This review includes both the resort and the Palagian liveabord.] We visited Wakatobi in 2000. What a difference 14 years has made! In 2000 transit there involved flights from Bali to Makassar (where we spent a night), then a flight to Kendari on the other side of Sulawesi and an 18 hour overnight boat ride on the Ciska, which might best be called a freighter. All passengers slept on the deck to avoid diesel fumes. Those were the old days. Now a direct flight from Bali to an airport (built by Wakatobi) on Tomia, about 1/2 hour boat ride from the resort. Lorez Mader has developed the resort from a longhouse which could accommodate about 14 divers to a compound which now can serve 50 or more divers in very nice villas and bungalows. Though the food is perhaps not 5 star gourmet is it excellent with a wide and varied assortment. We found our bungalow spacious and comfortable. Service throughout was superior and friendly - as we've found throughout Indonesia. We spent 5 days at the resort and 5 days on the Palagian liveabord. In both cases the reefs and diving experiences were as excellent as in 2000. While at the resort we dove from Wakatobi boat #VI which we shared with 6 other divers. There was room to spare. On the Palagian our "SuperLux" cabin #3 was all the title implies - larger by far than any liveaboard room we've had - even when we once shared a cabin with two friends. I say Lorenz is to be commended for his environmental and cultural sensitivities and the economic contribution to the area. He is especially proud of the ice-cream maker at the resort :-).
