Comments This is our second trip to Wakatobi Resort. It still is a wonderful resort with top notch diving and great food. Beware that flight delays can make you miss the twice weekly charter flight to Wakatobi and there is really no other way to get there so you miss 3-4 days of your vacation. Make sure to arrive in Bali at least 2 days before the flight to Wakatobi which is on Monday or Friday ONLY.
Our next trip we are planning to do their Liveaboard, the Pelagian. We toured it and I’ve never seen such a luxurious liveaboard before. Rooms were bigger than some of the resorts we’ve stayed in! Totally brand new. We are planning to stay 10 days on land as we did this trip and then a week on the boat.
The rooms are all very nice, but 14-20 even numbers have most breeze in front. 1-4 are closest to the dive boats and office, but still very private and quiet. Even the garden rooms are just fine, very private with ocean glimpses and slightly cheaper. All the rooms but the special villas, are the same. Very spacious, nicely appointed, outdoor showers, table and chairs, hammock, lounge chairs for sun or shade under umbrellas. Front porch. Lots of places to dry things out. Good spa services and building a new spa facility. The diving is from traditional boats, with head, good camera table, snacks and drinks. Usually 12-16 divers max in groups of 4 each with own dive master. DM’s available in all languages. Both times we had experienced local Indonesian guides and learned a lot about their culture. Can do a variety of packages, the typical is three per day plus unlimited shore dives. But there is a diving light package also and you can combine the two types. The food is incredible, local dishes at every meal or typical “american” offerings or they will custom make whatever you want any meal. Cooking classes were fun. Eat inside or out, all meals buffet. Good if expensive wine list and great cocktails in restaurant or at end of jetty deck.
Saw everything you’d expect for Indonesia...mostly small, nothing big. Only one shark, lots of turtles, giant schools of Trevally, small schools off bump Head’s, anenome fish all over, sea snakes, tiny nudi’s, pipefish and the highlight of our trip....watching two octopus mate for 40 minutes in about 40 feet of water out in the open changing colors and moving around all the time. Some raging currents. Other sites with none. Current frequently changed during the dive. Really fun and each dive was different than the last. Revisited some of our favorites at request. Giant stride in, good ladder out either with your gear or hand it up first. Easy resort to get around. One of our favorite places!! Hard to get to so stay at least 10-14 days and MUST do the live abroad.
