Comments Scuba Seraya is on the northeast part of Bali. Its location is quite picturesque, sitting at the foot of Tulamben volcano. I arrived in the evening when light was failing, so I didn’t see this view until the next morning. A group of divers from Singapore wanted to finish their visit with an early dive (6:30a) to the nearby Liberty wreck to see the school of bumphead parrotfish that inhabits the shallows by the wreck each morning, so I agreed to go along. We departed in darkness and entered the water just as the sun started to show. I had set my camera for wide angle, thinking I’d get good shots of the bumpheads. However, the vis was 5-10 feet that morning in open ocean, so I nearly ran into the school before seeing them. The vis cancelled any thoughts of photos. However, upon penetrating the wreck, we found vis improved and I was able to take a good photo of two bumpheads hanging by some nice coral growth on the ship. It was upon exiting the dive that I had my first view of the volcano overlooking the area, and it was impressive. I made sure to get photos on my next trip.

Since the vis was poor, I elected to do only macro photography. I was assigned a dive leader, Komang, who accompanied me on my next five solo dives and found so many critters and fish for me. Since it was just he and I, we spread out the dives to enjoy plenty of interval: 9a, 1p and 6p. The latter dive each day was a night dive on the house reef, Seraya Secret. I got so many photos of squat lobsters, crinoid shrimp, lots of other shrimp and crabs, plus plenty of juvenile fish that hide out among the rubble. It was my first time seeing a boxer crab and several other tiny decorator crabs covered in coral polyps. On the second day’s morning dive we returned to the Liberty wreck where my guide found one bargibanti and one denise pygmy seahorse for me. The only tough part of the night shore diving was that the wave action never let up so exiting on a rocky beach was challenging, but my guide and other dive guides were always there to help.

The rooms at this resort were comfortable and a short walk from the restaurant. Breakfast was included in the room cost, while lunch and dinner were ordered from a menu and paid for at checkout. Internet was available for a small charge. Just past the restaurant was the photo room, which was spacious and had charging stations, towels and good space for photographers. However, when I was there, only one other diver had his camera rig in the room, so I don’t know what capacity the room has. The dive area was next to the camera room. All dive gear was kept in large basins which the crew would wash and store overnight. Nitrox was available at a small charge. Everyone was quite helpful and friendly.

The last night the Singapore group was there the staff held a pig roast, and I was invited to join. Besides good food, there was singing and playing of instruments. It was a nice end to their trip and an enjoyable time for me. Then on my last full day there, I opted to not dive to give my gear a good chance to dry out and to see some local sights. I visited the former King’s residence and two water parks, one of which was where the king addressed his subjects on occasion. The weather cooperated that day, so my gear was dry and I headed to the Denpasar airport, a three-hour drive, the next morning. Bali Tours handled my transportation each way, arranged by Poseidon Dive Adventures, with which I’ve happily been a customer for 20 years.

Rinse tank for photo gear was at the dive center next to the gear rinse tank.
