Comments The superlative “unique” is overused and abused, so I’ll choose the word “distinctive” to tell my story about Reef Seen in Bali.

After 40 years of diving, I look for three things in a land-based dive operation:
1. Easy access to dive sites.
2. Stewardship of the marine treasure: coral.
3. Run by divers for divers.
And in each, Reef Seen gets high marks of distinction.

1. Easy access to dive sites: 5-minute boat ride is the average. And once you are there, we averaged 65 minutes per dive. As the owner Chris would say, they don’t call them “safety stops” because the diving at 15 feet is spectacular: corals, sea fans, and the most interesting attempts of camouflage from a cuttle fish I’ve ever seen. I spent 10 minutes with the guy and he did everything (thankfully short of inking me) that he could to make himself look unappealing.
2. Stewardship: It’s likely because of the efforts of Reef Seen over the last 25 years that the reefs off the village of Pemuteran on Bali’s north coast are healthy and vibrant. For a quick summary, read the write-up in the Lonely Planet guide to Bali.
3. By divers/for divers: The “resort” has a total of nine rooms. And they are all about diving (while of course offering icy cold beer after the dive). Nothing makes the owner and all the staff happier than repeat-visit divers who like to talk about diving. That said they are very welcoming to non-diving family members who are there for a snorkel or a sun-bake. Friendliness sums their attitude.
So the story is simple: Reef Seen is distinctive. Go there: you’ll enjoy the diving and you’ll enjoy the experience.
