Comments Resort:

Mimpi is a boutique resort which exceeded our expectations. The room we stayed in was a one bedroom with outside shower, hot springs Jacuzzi, wading pool and king sized covered bench area to relax. The room was beautifully landscaped and secluded from other rooms. It was a short walk from the room to the restaurant, spa and dive shop. The water was fresh and the A/C in the room worked well. The room had a large desk area and there were sufficient outlets to charge batteries. The food was average and could have been better. There was not one meal that we ate that I would rave about but the food was ok. I got sick as a dog after eating pork my last night and it is unknown if it was the pork or some bacteria from the water. The resort was very helpful in tracking down the village doctor to prescribe medication so I could travel. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone that wanted to mix relaxation with diving.

Diving:

The diving was managed by the Mimpi resort through their onsite dive shop. The boats appeared to be 3rd party contracted and they all looked the same so the was no difference in boats (except wear and tear and speed). The dive shop picked up gear at the room to be delivered to the dive shop. We did not handle our gear again until we checked out. We would recover our regulators and computers every day for ease of mind. The boat and dive crews handled the gear on and off the boat. The boats were island style open boats with some shaded area. The tanks with gear were lying in the bottom of the boat and the crew would assist in donning the gear to make the back roll entry. The seats were narrow enough to make the back roll entry comfortable enough. The crews were capable but not well versed in handing off and retrieving photo/video gear. Exit from the water was done by handing off weights, then BCD and fins. Exit from the water on homemade wooden ladder was comfortable and easy to do. Water and lunch was provided on the boat when it went to Menjangan Island . Morning dives were at 9 am departure with a surface interval for lunch then return after 2nd dive. Plenty of time to do other things or relax in the afternoon. The dive crew would rinse and hang gear each day after dives. We never had more than 2 divers with a dive guide.

Reef:

The Menjangan island has mostly wall with some sloping sandy bottom reef. The island is a marine park so there was plenty of marine life to observe. Lots of fish and macro stuff but not much in the way of large fish. A huge disappointment for me was that the villagers are still long line fishing around the reef (for tuna) and net fishing right off the reef. It's obvious that the marine park rules are not enforced in this area which I assume to be because there is no obvious sign of enforcement. We did see one fast boat with police on the front of the boat but it had a couple of drunks that were drinking at the resort and flashing themselves in front of guests. The police were not locals, they were Australian.

We made 2 dives in Secret Bay which is muck diving. We agreed to leave early in the morning by car to enable us to make 2 dives before the tide went out which impacts visibility. The first dive was fantastic with lots of macro critters but the second dive was poor visibility. If I did again I would request a earlier start. We did see a yellow and brown very large seahorse in 3-4' of water on the second dive. I would highly recommend making the Secret Bay dive if you like seeing macro stuff (nudi's, ghost pipefish, shrimps, cuttlefish, frog fish, sea horses, imperial shrimp, etc). I was shocked at the amount of green algae that was covering the bottom. This algae is the hard flat sheet kind that looks and feels like torn plastic pieces. There were all kinds of macro stuff in and under the algae.

UW Photo Comments Island boats with no rinse tanks or secure places to place video/photo gear. Did request large tub to be filled with sea water and they were happy to accomodate. Boat crews did not appear to be well versed on handling photo/video gear.
